Black – Kevin Richard Martin

Black is a dark dub ambient ode and deconstructed of Amy Winehouse’s ‘Back To Black’.

Aruba – Michiru Aoyama

I’m not sure what Aruba means in Japanese. A first-person pronoun used to refer to oneself? To protect? Does it mean horse?

Chemo Sessions – Tony Rolando

Electronic musician, electronic music instrument designer, and founder of Make Noise, Tony Rolando, created this music for his partner Kelly to listen to at her chemotherapy infusion sessions, and was designed to be easily listened to on repeat. Temporarily living in Boston for Kelly’s cancer treatment at the time, he only had a laptop with which to make music instead of his usual arsenal of Eurorack and other analog gear.

This music is free, anything paid for it will be donated to Dana Farber Cancer Center.

stray light – anthéne

Polar Seas was a Toronto-based Ambient label that ceased operating last month (see the April 5th post for their 75th and final release) but has sprouted a new “cassette label” called floralia. This is release 01 for floralia.

Intershop / Oasis – Dettinger

Two remastered versions of what some would classify as Ambient classics. Dettinger’s music definitely falls into that rave chill-out zone sub-category of ambient, with its minimal beats that entrance you instead of making you move your feet.

Dissolvi – Grand River & Abul Mogard

First single off the upcoming In uno spazio immenso, the first collaborative album between Berlin-based Dutch-Italian composer and sound designer Aimée Portioli, aka Grand River, and veteran Italian producer Guido Zen, aka Abul Mogard, that releases June 21st.

Eleven Fugues For Sodium Pentothal – Adam Wiltzie

The latest suite by Stars Of The Lid co-founder, Adam Wiltzie, was initially inspired by a recurring dream wherein “if someone listened to the music I created, then they would die.”

Rendezvous – Jogging House

A sampler, some table-top synths, some guitar pedals, a Kalimba, some Modular, recorded in single takes straight to 1/4″ tape.

Sognato di Domani – Fennesz

Christian Fennesz latest recording is part of an upcoming album due for release later this year.

Tsuta – Michiru Aoyama

Michiru Aoyama not only releases an Ambient album every

Ambient Music Releases of the Week: May 3, 2024

Still My World – Two Lone Swordsmen

Although technically not new (previously available on a Japanese promo CD), and I don’t really categorize this as strictly Ambient music (a little too much percussion) but perhaps something more reminiscent of Downtempo, this 2003 commission by Italian fashion house Emigliano Zegna to soundtrack their Japanese debut gets an official release for Record Store Day 2024 and is worth a listen.

Infinite Light – Not Waving & Romance

Romance and Not Waving’s collaboration draws inspiration from Botticelli’s iconic painting ‘The Birth of Venus’ and combines charts with strings, tape loops and synthy goodness.

RITUAL (evocation) – Jon Hopkins

OK, this one’s got a driving beat, but I’ll allow it anyway because who doesn’t like Jon Hopkins? His new album RITUAL will be out August 30th.

Differ – KRM & KMRU

Kevin Richard Martin (The Bug) and Joseph Kamaru (KMRU) join forces for Disconnect, an album that releases June 14, 2024. Surprisingly, although KMRU is known for his droning landscapes of sound, he has contributed vocals to this effort. Differ is the first sample of their collab.

Winter Sun / Fever Dream – Gaussian Curve

Gigi Masin, Jonny Nash and Marco Sterk’s Gaussian Curve are back for the first time since their 2016 album ‘The Distance’, presenting two new tracks entitled ‘Winter Sun’ and ‘Fever Dream’.

Imprint – Koichi Shimizu

Composer Koichi Shimizu is best known as the sound designer for Thai film director Apichatpong Weerasethakul. This is a nice sampler of his work that goes from Japanese Environmental music and Autechre-like rhythmic pulses.

Amsterdam Blue – Jon Hassell

Smooth, cool ambient bluesy jazz from the soundtrack of The Million Dollar Hotel.

Sky Within Us – Various Artists

For its 75th and final release, Toronto-based ambient label Polar Seas has put out a digital compilation album featuring the label’s friends and collaborators. All proceeds will be donated to FLAP Canada, for the protection of birds against collisions with buildings.

Reflections In Repose –Steve Roach

Steve Roach’s latest release, Reflections In Response, was created over two evenings at the Timehouse, Baja Arizona, the eve of Christmas 2023, and was recorded in the same sequence as presented on the two discs’ 116 minutes. The five long-form tracks were performed on a single instrument — the Oberheim OB-X8 — the modern spiritual successor of the iconic Oberheim OB-8 which Steve used 40 years ago in the making of his classic piece Structures from Silence.

Kujyuu – Michiru Aoyama

Michiru Aoyama, the Kyoto-based ambient artist known for writing, recording, and releasing “an album a day”, has released another of his digital albums with an über-design living room on the cover, Kujyuu.

Impossibly distant, impossibly close – Abul Mogard & Rafael Anton Irisarri

This release is borne of a remote partnership that was ignited during a 2023 performance Abul Mogard and Rafael Anton Irisarri did in Madrid for the opening of the SoundSet Series at the Condeduque cultural center.
